Storm the Gates!

College: It's in your future. But at this point, it's a strange and foreign place, with strange people having strange and exciting conversations. At this writing camp, we'll help you learn to speak the language that will get you into college by helping you tell your academic story for admissions committees. You'll also get your writing passport stamped in various college domains by learning to write like a scientist, an art critic, a social scientist, a creative writer, and an informed citizen. Brian Jackson, coordinator of University Writing at BYU, will take students on a journey across writing domains. College-bound writers who come to Storm the Gates! will be more prepared to write themselves into college and develop a voice once there.

Jonathan Garcia is adjunct faculty at BYU, teaching first-year and advanced writing courses. Because he studied rhetoric for his M.A. degree, he considers himself a generalist in various genres and disciplines, though he has a penchant for poetry, personal essays, and legal writing. Last year’s BYU writing camp was a success, so Jonathan is back to team-teach with Katie Fredrickson another round of Storm the Gates! as well a new Creative Writing camp. He lives in Provo with his wife Mandy, and they enjoy watching movies and trying out new restaurants.

Hi! I'm Katie Fredrickson-Roberts. But most of my students simply call me K Fred. I teach Language Arts at Bingham High School and spend my summers hiking, camping, and river rafting with my husband. Prior to teaching I received my B.A. in English Teaching from USU and my M.A. in Rhetoric and Composition from BYU. My passion for writing grew out of my love of good books and family stories.
